Discount Calculator

See the sale price and what the discount costs you.

This calculator does two jobs. For shoppers, it converts an original price and a percentage off into the final sale price and the exact amount saved. For business owners, it also shows what the promotion does to the margin on each unit sold, which is the part most discount decisions miss.

Discounts are the most expensive marketing tool a small business has, because every dollar of discount comes straight out of profit rather than out of a budget. A 20% discount on a product carrying a 40% margin cuts the profit on that sale roughly in half, meaning you need close to double the volume just to stand still.

Enter the original price, the discount percentage, and optionally your unit cost. The calculator returns the discounted price, the savings, and the margin you are left with, so you can decide whether a promotion is worth running before you announce it.

How it's calculated

  • Amount saved = Original price × (Discount % ÷ 100)
  • Sale price = Original price − Amount saved
  • Margin after discount % = ((Sale price − Cost) ÷ Sale price) × 100

Frequently asked questions

How do I stack two discounts?
Apply them one after another, not added together. 20% then 10% off $100 gives $72, not $70. Run the calculator twice.
Is the discount applied before tax?
Almost always yes. Sales tax is calculated on the discounted price in both the US and Canada.
What discount is safe for my business?
Keep the post-discount margin above the level that covers overhead. If your gross margin is 40%, a discount above about 15% starts to hurt quickly.
Can I work backwards from a target sale price?
Yes — adjust the discount percentage until the sale price matches your target; the result updates live.
