US Sales Tax Calculator

State base rates plus your local district rate.

Sales tax in the United States is set state by state, then layered again by counties, cities, and special districts. This calculator starts from the state base rate for any of the fifty states plus Washington DC, and lets you add the local rate that applies at the point of sale so the total reflects what a customer actually pays.

Five states have no statewide sales tax at all: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon — though Alaska allows local jurisdictions to charge their own. At the other end, combined state and local rates in parts of Louisiana, Tennessee, and Arkansas exceed 10%.

Since the 2018 Wayfair decision, remote sellers must collect tax in states where they exceed an economic nexus threshold, commonly $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions in a year. That makes accurate rate lookups a compliance issue for any business shipping across state lines. Enter an amount below to add or remove tax and see the breakdown.

How it's calculated

  • Combined rate = State base rate + Local / district rate
  • Adding tax: Total = Pre-tax amount × (1 + Combined rate ÷ 100)
  • Removing tax: Pre-tax amount = Total ÷ (1 + Combined rate ÷ 100)

Frequently asked questions

Which states have no sales tax?
Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax, though Alaska permits local sales taxes.
Where do I find my local rate?
Your state department of revenue publishes rate lookups by address or ZIP code. Local rates commonly add 1–5%.
Do I charge tax on out-of-state sales?
Only where you have nexus. Physical presence always creates nexus; economic nexus usually starts at $100,000 in sales or 200 transactions.
